After leaving Franz Josef, we passed through the town of Fox Glacier and stopped at Lake Matheson, a lake that looks like a mirror reflecting the Southern Alps. The drive down to Queenstown was long, but the scenery was amazing. We passed by some more lakes, including Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka. This part of New Zealand is a big mixture between lakes, mountains, plains and forests. We also stopped at the Kawarau Bridge that passes over the Kawarau River and which is home to the world's first commercial bungy jumping site by AJ Hackett. It is only 43 meters high, but it's very popular. AJ Hackett just opened the highest bungy jumping site in the world from the Macau Tower in Hong Kong (233 meters high). We saw a few people jump, but we didn't. The Kawarau bungy bridge is also the place from where they filmed the river scene with the two big king statues in The Lord of the Rings 1! From there we drove to Queenstown and checked-in to our hostel: The Last Resort. It was a tiny hostel, but very nice and very home-like; we would definitely recommend it! In the evening we walked around town for a bit, had dinner and then headed back to the hostel to enjoy a good nights' sleep!
Weather: very very cold and rainy
