Franz Josef Glacier - day 60

At 9h15 we checked-in for our full day glacier hike. We got all the gear (raincoat, overtrousers, gloves, crampons, hats, etc.) and after a short bus ride were dropped off near the Franz Josef Glacier. We walked through the forest and along a river for an hour and then got near the bottom of the glacier. We put our crampons on and started our walk on the ice. We were in a group of 11 people and had one guide with an axe (he actually played in Lord of the Rings 2 as one of the orcs!). As we got further onto the ice, he just started chopping through the ice to make some steps for us... We climbed for a while and then stopped for lunch on some rocks. It had been raining all morning, so when we stopped, we got really cold! Franz Josef actually gets an average of 6 meters of rain per year! After lunch we continued the hike over the ice and went through some very nice bright blue ice tunnels. The view was amazing from up on the glacier, cause it is one of only three glaciers in the world that is surrounded by rainforest. We even saw an alpine parrot called a kea that was walking over the ice (we never really understood why it bothered walking rather than just flying over it...). In total we spent 7 hours on the glacier and really enjoyed it! It was an amazing experience and definitely recommendable to anyone! (don't do the half day hike, it's a rip-off!) We got back to Chateau Franz in time for the evening soup and then cooked some spaghetti bolognaise and had dinner with some friends from the bus.

Weather: lots of rain down below, cloudy but not rainy on the ice, very cold everywhere...
